What if your best result wasn’t actually your best performance?
That question came up last week when we took Legally Speaking Podcast ™️, Legally on the Move to Manchester for the Professional Training Conference Regional Edition.
Earlier this year we recorded the series in London.
Now we’re taking the conversation beyond the capital, starting a new three-part series with Nadine Stanton, CEO of Professional Training.
One of the best discussions we had was around how we actually measure high performance.
Emma Wiggs MBE (triple Paralympic gold medallist and thirteen-time world champion paracanoeist), spoke at the conference about being more proud of a silver medal than a gold.
Why?
Because she knew she had performed better.
I think there is a lesson in that for law firms.
We can become obsessed with the scoreboard.
Revenue. Billables. Rankings. Targets.
But hitting the number does not always mean you performed at your best.
And missing it does not always mean you failed.
Sometimes a better question is:
Did we improve?
Did we communicate better?
Did we challenge each other when something wasn’t working?
Did everyone understand the goal and their role in achieving it?
Did we create an environment where people felt able to speak honestly?
Nadine talks about all of this in our first Manchester minisode: clear goals, over-communication in hybrid teams, psychological safety, shared values and the importance of respectful challenge.
We also discussed why the best conferences should not just have an audience.
They should have participants.
People contributing, questioning, sharing what is actually happening inside their firms and learning from each other.
That is where community becomes valuable.
That is exactly what we saw in Manchester.
Episode 1 of our three-part Legally on the Move: Professional Training Regional Edition is out now on all major podcast platforms.
So here is the question:
Are you measuring your team by the result they achieved, or by how well they actually performed?
