On 8 July 2022, early in the morning, Rogers, one of Canada’s largest telecom companies, was updating its core network. A routing filter was removed by mistake during the update, and within two minutes the core of the network began failing. More than 12 million people lost their mobile and internet service. If you were using the Rogers network on your phone, you couldn’t even call 911.
But you didn’t have to be a Rogers customer to be affected by this. You could be standing in a shop with a phone that worked fine on another network and still not be able to pay by debit, because the payment network was caught in the same failure.
In a mesh network, there’s no single path everything has to take. Every node talks to the nodes next to it, so if one link drops and there’s another route, the data goes around it. SLNN Mesh is the mesh we’re developing at SourceLess: node hardware that connects over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, stores data and links up with the rest of the SourceLess ecosystem.
A mesh doesn’t make failure impossible, and you need enough nodes within reach of each other for other routes to exist. SLNN Mesh is currently in testing, including in Constanța.
We’d like networks where one company’s mistake doesn’t reach 12 million people.
