What if your best lawyers aren’t leaving law, but escaping your law firm?
Firms spend millions attracting talent. Yet how many question why people leave?
This week’s newsletter explores culture, leadership and the real cost of losing talent.

Falling out of love with law?
Samuel McGinty nearly walked away. Today, he leads legal services at the University of Nottingham.
Sometimes it’s not the career. It’s the culture.

The phone being answered isn’t the win.
What happens next is.
That’s why I back @LexideskAI: not just answering calls, but qualifying, prioritising, booking and following up.
AI answering the phone is useful.
AI knowing what to do next is where it gets interesting.

Everyone’s talking about AI in law.
But buying the tech isn’t the same as transforming your law firm!
My biggest takeaway from a cracking Clio Elevate Manchester?
Technology matters. People make it work.
Brilliant insights, even better community!
Thanks to our Legally Speaking Podcast sponsor for a great day.
Next stop, ClioCon Boston!

If AI saves time on legal work, what should change on the client’s bill?
A question worth asking before celebrating the efficiency gain.
More on pricing with John Hutchinson, Managing Partner of Broadfield in this week’s Legally Speaking Podcast sponsored by Clio.

What if the law firms that win the next decade are not the biggest, but the ones that serve clients best?
AI is changing delivery.
Clients are questioning hourly rates.
Talent wants more entrepreneurial platforms.
And the distance between lawyer and client is shrinking.
This week’s Legally Speaking Podcast ™️ newsletter explores my conversation with John Hutchinson, Managing Partner of Broadfield UK, on what the modern law firm could look like next.
People. Trust. Judgement. Service.
Maybe those fundamentals matter more than ever.

What if your best result wasn’t actually your best performance?
That question came up last week when we took Legally Speaking Podcast ™️, Legally on the Move to Manchester for the Professional Training Conference Regional Edition.
Earlier this year we recorded the series in London.
Now we’re taking the conversation beyond the capital, starting a new three-part series with Nadine Stanton, CEO of Professional Training.
One of the best discussions we had was around how we actually measure high performance.
Emma Wiggs MBE (triple Paralympic gold medallist and thirteen-time world champion paracanoeist), spoke at the conference about being more proud of a silver medal than a gold.
Why?
Because she knew she had performed better.
I think there is a lesson in that for law firms.
We can become obsessed with the scoreboard.
Revenue. Billables. Rankings. Targets.
But hitting the number does not always mean you performed at your best.
And missing it does not always mean you failed.
Sometimes a better question is:
Did we improve?
Did we communicate better?
Did we challenge each other when something wasn’t working?
Did everyone understand the goal and their role in achieving it?
Did we create an environment where people felt able to speak honestly?
Nadine talks about all of this in our first Manchester minisode: clear goals, over-communication in hybrid teams, psychological safety, shared values and the importance of respectful challenge.
We also discussed why the best conferences should not just have an audience.
They should have participants.
People contributing, questioning, sharing what is actually happening inside their firms and learning from each other.
That is where community becomes valuable.
That is exactly what we saw in Manchester.
Episode 1 of our three-part Legally on the Move: Professional Training Regional Edition is out now on all major podcast platforms.
So here is the question:
Are you measuring your team by the result they achieved, or by how well they actually performed?

If your client can get an answer from AI, what are they paying you for?
I asked Broadfield’s, Managing Partner John Hutchinson, about AI, legal advice and building a firm people want to join.

Really enjoyed this collaboration with Aleksandra Kowalska from Legal London Academy.
We filmed by the Royal Exchange, near where my City career began in 2008, and spoke about how podcasts can help lawyers improve their Legal English, learn from different career journeys and better understand the profession.
500+ conversations later, the Legally Speaking Podcast sponsored by Clio continues to inspire legal minds and transform legal futures.

Big move from @LexideskAI 🚀
Lexidesk is now available in ChatGPT, so firms can ask plain-English questions about real calls, chats and leads.
What’s converting? Who needs a callback? What objections keep coming up?
Better intake data. Faster decisions.

If AI gives lawyers time back, let’s use it where clients need us most.
Ed Walters made that point brilliantly at Clio’s AI Summit: advocate, advise and help people through difficult decisions.
Loved hosting it. A lawyer’s value has always been worth more than hours on a clock!
